A Laugh A Minute - Rusty But Fun
Cross country skiing on the trails surrounding Sheep Mountain Lodge, Alaska. An amazing day of bald eagles, glaciers, moose and a refresher course in XX skiing.

Ghost On The Horizon
The shy but mighty Denali reveils herself only on her schedule.
Some 135 miles away from our vantage point above Sam and Gretchen's house, Denali, far right at 6194 meters or 20,320 feet is the tallest mountain in North America.
1961 Polaris Sno-Traveler
Yesterday we visited an Anchorage museum that had a wonderful display on the origins of the Iditarod sled dog race including this vintage snow machine. Matthew and Brian, enjoy. The link here is to a 1963 magazine ad. (click on any image to enlarge)

The P is Silent
We had a wonderful introduction to snowshoeing yesterday in the Chugach mountains above Sam & Gretchen's house. We had been on an uphill climb for about 30 minutes when we came into the thick brush in the photo below. I was in the lead and as I stepped into the thicket there was an explosion of black and white off to my left. A Ptarmigan, very much like the Eastern Ruffed Grouse, exploded from the base of a Lodge pole pine. I have read about these Arctic birds since I was a teenager and was very excited to see my first. I wasn't quick enough to get it on film.

What an amazing 1:45 minute snowshoeing hike with the mountains on every side.

Sheep Mountain XX Skiing

Monday was an amazing day. We had to drive for about two hours to have enough snow but it was worth it. We saw an eagle, glacier and moose on the way to Sheep Mountain Lodge for a day of cross country skiing. Two hours and the dogs never stopped running. My legs are still tired.

Room With A Mountain View
We spent Saturday skiing at the Alyeska Resort in Girdwood. It had snowed 78 inches on the summit the previous 4 days. I managed a half day on the slopes with Sam & Gretchen. The deep powder just kicked my butt. I have never experienced anything quite like it.
